What is PCOD?
All women have two ovaries that release an egg alternately every month. The ovaries produce androgens or male hormones in minute quantities. PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) is a condition where the ovaries release a lot of immature or partially-mature eggs which eventually turn into cysts. Some of the common symptoms are abdominal weight gain, irregular periods, male pattern hair loss and infertility. In this condition, the ovaries usually become enlarged and secrete large amounts of androgens that can cause havoc with a woman’s fertility and her body. The best treatment for PCOD often looks at reducing the severity of such symptoms.
Having PCOS does not mean you can't get pregnant. PCOS is one of the most common, but treatable, causes of infertility in women. In women with PCOS, the hormonal imbalance interferes with the growth and release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation)
Ovulation induction is a straightforward fertility treatment that involves taking oral or injectable medication to stimulate regular ovulation. The medication is usually taken at the beginning of the menstrual cycle and the body's response is monitored through the cycle using ultrasound.
Ovulation is induced using one of two main drug regimens: Clomiphene citrate and Letrozole tablets increase the production of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) by the pituitary gland, thereby stimulating follicles and hence egg growth.
FSH injections:
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is a pure hormone injected daily in the first half of your menstrual cycle. It is injected just under the skin with a very fine needle (usually as a pen-device).
Ovulation induction medications can lead to multiple follicles developing and maturing in one cycle – more than one egg may be released in ovulation.
What if it doesn’t work?
If ovulation induction is unsuccessful, we’ll talk about other treatment options like Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) or In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
